Crypto vs Forex: Volatility, Hours and Structural Differences

How the two markets differ in liquidity, session structure, volatility regimes and the practical implications for position sizing.

Two markets, two clocks

Foreign exchange runs continuously from the Sydney open on Monday to the New York close on Friday, organised into overlapping sessions with predictable liquidity peaks. Crypto trades every hour of every day, including holidays. That difference changes everything about routine: forex traders can define a session and step away, crypto traders must define one artificially or be permanently on call.

Volatility regimes are an order of magnitude apart

A major currency pair moving 1% in a day is a notable session. A large-cap cryptocurrency moving 1% in an hour is unremarkable. Because position sizing is derived from stop distance, the same account risk produces dramatically smaller crypto positions — and traders who carry forex sizing habits into crypto discover this the expensive way.

  • Forex majors — typical daily range 0.4% to 1.2%.
  • Large-cap crypto — typical daily range 2% to 8%, with frequent outliers.
  • Weekend gaps — absent in crypto, structurally relevant in forex and indices.

Liquidity and funding differ in kind

Forex liquidity is provided by a concentrated network of banks and non-bank market makers, which keeps spreads on majors extremely tight. Crypto liquidity is fragmented across venues, so the same instrument can show different prices and depth simultaneously. On leveraged crypto products, financing is often expressed as a periodic funding rate that can swing positive or negative, rather than a stable overnight swap.

What this means when comparing platforms

A platform offering both asset classes should be evaluated separately for each: spread behaviour, weekend availability, financing disclosure and instrument coverage rarely have the same quality across the two. Our NordicFX review looks at the advertised instrument universe with that split in mind, and our platform evaluation framework explains the scoring.
